This course will introduce you to common practices of
public speaking, and it will give you an opportunity to
practice effective public communication and gain confidence.
The first speech is a "get your feet wet" speech,
introducing a classmate. The first major speech is an
Information speech on a topic of your choice. The second
major speech involves reading a selection of your choice.
This is called Oral Interpretation. The third speech is
a Group Symposium on a topic of global importance. You
will work with classmates to execute this. The last major
speech is on a controversial topic. You will try to persuade
the class to agree with your point of view. You will be
called to serve as a judge several times throughout the
semester. |

Introduction
I. The Isles of My Portfolio in English 121 (Writing in the Discipline)
III. Writing in the Discipline as a Platform in Education for Sustainable Development
This is English 121 Writing in the Discipline
this course aims to develop the student’s competence in writing.
When I was young I really don't know the importance of
studying English. We formally begun studying it since elementary. I was so
curious about it. The lessons being discussed by our teachers from grade
one up to grade six are almost same. But still I couldn't even master it even
the most basic eight parts of speech. Maybe because I just really hate it and I
find difficult on it.

For me ,as a student, learning English now became more
challenging but fun and interesting. Many words rhyme with one another. Good
sounds to hear. I started love reading poem, literature and compositions. Every
time I read it gives me more ideas and knowledge about those unfamiliar words
which I never encounter before. Exploring the adventurous world of English is a
different kind of experience.
We as a student specially being in college should
exercise and develop our skills in writing and understanding English. To become
more competitive, productive and successful one in our field of study and in
our future career.
IV.Reflection in English 121
MY REFLECTION
Chapter 1. Avoiding Sentence Error
This is the first time I
recognize that writing sentences had also some errors. sometimes in
writing compositions or in expressing our ideas through writing, we just simply
wrote what is in our mind.We don't even recognize the errors in our own writing.Maybe
because we just simply ignore it or in reality we really don't know how to
identify those errors.
Learning to identify those errors is hard for me to identify at first.Even the
computer cannot detect it.As a writer you must give your attention and focused
on what you are doing.
Chapter 2.Levels of Usage
English has its two levels
of usage; The formal and informal level of usage.Well, for me what ever level of usage you tend to use ,as long as you know how to handle yourself with confidence on how to speak with correct grammar, its not bad.
Chapter 3.Verb Usage
from elementary until now,we studied what verb really is.Verb is a parts of speech that tells the action done by the subject. If we compare this in our life as as students, verb can be define as our performance at school.
Chapter 4.Pronoun Usage
Well by this topic, the lessons being discussed became more complicated.I
thought pronoun are just words that take place of nouns to avoid
repeating over and over. But I was wrong, even the pronoun has its usage
depending on how you use them in a sentence.
I couldn't imagine myself while taking up our
quiz.I don't have any background about this topic because I don't even read in
advance.I admit it was my fault.Well together with my photo copy i answer those
question as far as I know.
Chapter 5.Subject and
Verb Agreement
Agreement between two parts of speech is very important specially in the case
of subject and its verb which are very important components of a
sentence.Subject must agree with its verb and same through with the verb.
This topic is just a sort of review.I
already learn this since elementary. But being a slow learner elementary
pupil, who hates English,I never put it in my mind.I'll just learn it when
i was in high school.
And now ready to pick up my stock
knowledge and add as many as I can.
Chapter 6. Pronoun and Antecedent Agreement
When we talk about subject and verb
agreement,we said that the subject and the verb must agree in number. That is,
you have to make sure that both are singular or both are plural. The same goes
with pronoun and antecedent.
Well honestly,there are times I
make confused between these two.But as what I had observe, this type of
agreement has a relation from the previews lesson which is the subject and verb
agreement.
Chapter 7.Adjective and Adverb Usage
Most of the time we are confuse between these two. They had some similarities. They are both modifiers. We must be careful not to use an adjective where we need an adverb.Usually we use these two to give more color about the sentence we use.

V. Integration of Education for Sustainable Development to English 121
Brief Description
This project assessed the impact of criticism on students’
awareness of environmental issues by means of questionnaires and focus
groups. It aimed to assess the baseline awareness of environmental
issues in English undergraduates at Bath Spa University and see how
taking different modules modified it. It also aimed to disseminate
examples of best practice in education for sustainable development
Background
Promoting (ESD) is an urgent moral and political priority. Within
English, the field of criticism has been slowly growing in
recognition, with the publication of introductory undergraduate texts
and the development of organizations such as the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment
of which there is a UK branch. A number of HEIs now offer undergraduate
modules in criticism and related topics. In the USA, where criticism has had more of an impact on English, ASLE has encouraged
and published research into the pedagogy of ESD, but there has thus far
been no research in this area in the UK.
Methodology
A survey of ESD pedagogy was undertaken, along with a detailed
analysis of the place of criticism in the curriculum at Bath Spa
University. Quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (focus group)
evidence of ESD awareness was gathered before and after students taking
certain modules. The selection included 3 modules in which ESD awareness
might be thought to increase, and 2 controls with no specific overcritical content. We also conducted in-depth semi-structured
interviews with students taking the module ‘Writing and Environmental
Crisis’. The quantitative analysis gave a broad but crude sense of the
impact of ESD (with controls), while the qualitative analyses explored
in more detail just what the students learned, and why and how they
learned it. The interviews also questioned students about their broader
commitments to sustainability, and invited suggestions as to how it
might be promoted more successfully in the subject.
